Synopsis

"Twelve Years a Slave" is the true story of Solomon Northup, a free African-American man living in New York in the mid-19th century. In 1841, he is lured to Washington, D.C., under the pretense of a job opportunity, only to be kidnapped and sold into slavery in the South. Renamed "Platt," he spends the next twelve years enduring the brutality and degradation of slavery on various plantations in Louisiana. Throughout his ordeal, Northup struggles to maintain his dignity and humanity while witnessing and experiencing the horrors of slavery firsthand. He faces harsh treatment, physical abuse, and the constant threat of violence. Despite the inhumane conditions, Northup finds moments of kindness and solidarity from some fellow enslaved individuals. As years pass, Northup makes several attempts to regain his freedom, including reaching out to legal authorities and writing letters to friends and family in the North. Finally, after twelve years, his letter reaches sympathetic individuals who help secure his release. Northup returns to his family in New York, where he ultimately publishes his harrowing account of slavery. "Twelve Years a Slave" serves as a powerful firsthand testimony to the cruelty of slavery and the resilience of the human spirit. It sheds light on the systemic injustices of the American slave trade and became a significant catalyst for the abolitionist movement.
