"The Hunger Games" is a dystopian novel set in the nation of Panem, where the Capitol holds absolute power over twelve districts. Each year, to remind the districts of their failed rebellion, the Capitol hosts the Hunger Games, a televised event where one boy and one girl from each district are chosen to fight to the death. The story follows Katniss Everdeen, a resourceful young woman from District 12, who volunteers to take her sister's place in the Games. Alongside Peeta Mellark, the other tribute from her district, Katniss navigates the brutal competition, forms alliances, and challenges the oppressive regime of the Capitol. As the Games unfold, Katniss must confront her own values, survival instincts, and feelings for Peeta amidst the deadly spectacle.
