Synopsis
"The Yellow Wallpaper" is a short story that follows a woman's descent into madness. The protagonist, suffering from what is likely postpartum depression, is confined to a room in a house by her husband, who is also her physician. As she spends more time in isolation, she becomes obsessed with the wallpaper in the room, believing it contains a trapped woman. Her mental state deteriorates further, leading to hallucinations and paranoia. Ultimately, she tears down the wallpaper in an act of liberation, symbolizing her rebellion against the oppressive forces in her life. The story serves as a powerful commentary on the patriarchal oppression of women and the detrimental effects of societal expectations on mental health.
